Last Tuesday, 18th of February, 2014, numerous travel and tourism enthusiasts gathered at Four Point Sheraton Hotel in Lagos, to discuss with top Nigeria-based travel bloggers on how to promote tourism in Nigeria through story-telling, as well as to assess the impact social and digital media is having on the domestic travel, tourism and hospitality industry in Nigeria.
The panelists included Pelu Awofeso (Travel Journalist, Homestead publishing), Folarin Kolawole (Travel Blogger and Founder of Naijatreks.com), Tannaz Bahnam (Founder/Managing Director of Lost In Lagos), Ify Acholonu (Founder of Save our Treasures Heritage Foundation), Lape Soetan (Travel Blogger at www.lapesoetan.com), Adaobi Okonkwo (Graphic Designer/Illustrator and Blogger at www.dobbyssignature.com) and Lara Aromire (Travel Blogger at www.labyrinthsoflahrah.blogspot.com).
The speakers engaged their audience with interesting and striking photos from their trips around Nigeria and spoke on the awe they felt at each of the locations. The question and answer session featured another period of engaging discussion between the audience and the panelists during which the public raised important suggestions on ways in which African travel bloggers can promote the effectiveness of their story telling. Some of the suggestions include involvement of locals at remote areas of the country and strategic collaboration between Nigerian travel bloggers on projects.
Everyone left the meeting with a rekindled passion for domestic tourism irrespective of the apparent infrastructural challenges the Nigerian tourism industry is confronted with. To watch the full video clip of the event, see below (after the photos):
